So, after rolling my eyes for the umpteenth time at the internet coverage of the Twilight movies, I wake up to find BREAKING NEWS COVERAGE regarding the alterations of Wonder Woman's costume... My words tasted bitter as usual.But it always makes me at least chuckle a little when I see mainstream news outlets covering recent developments in comic books, most likely because I'm a geek and these types of changes are to be expected (AND SNARKED AT WITH MASS PREJUDICE!!!). I still remember a few years back when Captain America got assassinated in Civil War- Yahoo was regarding plot swerve as though it were a real assassination. Things like this always make me scratch my head just a bit, but alas, the world now knows that Diana has traded her bicycle shorts for a pair of form-fitting under-armor thermals.
Onto the actual subject at hand, I'm always up for change. I think embracing the times and progessing old troupes and mythologies is what really makes a generation take notice of these entertainment mediums (as I mentioned above, Captain America getting assassinated). However, the comic book industry always has a habit of screwing the pooch when it comes to these leaps forward and they have to take five paces backward (as I mentioned above, after a while following Captain America's assassination OMFG HE'S ALIVE!).
This ensemble above seems like it intended well, to make Wonder Woman look strong rather than a sexual object. I mean, if this were some sort of concept art for Wonder Woman's costume for Smallville I'd be marking out, but nothing about what I see above really denotes what the character is about (save for the badass braclets/gauntlets, awesome). She's an Amazon, rubbing elbows with Greek Gods and so forth. I know, I know, putting her in a frilly toga that barely covers her would be demeaning but hell, this looks like the equivalent to what Peter Parker threw together to fight Macho Man Randy Savage in Spider-man 1.
But anyway, that's my two cents.
If anything, it's rather remakable to see them try and do something with an established 'look' of a character since Wonder Woman's clothing was so iconic. If DC doesn't take 5 paces back, I'd like to see what else comes of this recent initiative to re-imagine costumes...
.......Then again, this might very well just be a way to warm people up for a Wonder Woman movie.
